Summary
A brutal story, yet including some lyrical and even satirical moments, this opera was once banned in the former U.S.S.R. Katerina, unhappily married to a merchant (Zinovij), takes one of his workmen (Sergey) as her lover. She poisons her obnoxious father-in-law (Boris), and with Sergey's help, kills Zinovij. The crime is discovered and the two are sent to Siberia. When Sergey deserts her for one of the other women convicts (Sonetka), Katerina plunges both Sonetka and herself into the river.
