Notes from the Reading Life: Desus Nice and Rebecca Carroll: Notes from the Reading Life

Event Details

A Bronx native, and one-time frustrated writer, discusses the role books and reading have played in his life before and since becoming a star of new media.

Desus Nice is a writer, comedian and podcaster who rose to prominence alongside fellow Bronx native The Kid Mero. The two amassed a social media following based on their 140-character complaints about mutual dissatisfaction with their jobs mixed with sharp commentary on pop culture. Their twitter success eventually led to a web video series (“Desus Vs. Mero”), which was followed by their hit podcast “The Bodega Boys.” Now their late night show “Desus & Mero” is in its second season on VICELAND.

Nice speaks with Rebecca Carroll, cultural critic and Editor of Special Projects for WNYC. A critic at large for the Los Angeles Times, and a regular columnist at Shondaland and Gothamist, Carroll is also the author of several interview-based books about race and blackness in America, including the award-winning Sugar in the Raw.

Notes from the Reading Life is a discussion series that features some of our most well-known and well-read neighbors discussing the books that excite and inspire them—the books that guided them through their careers (in art, entertainment, comedy, and more), helping to make them into who they are today. Presented in partnership by the National Book Foundation and The New York Public Library, Notes from the Reading Life will take place throughout June at four library branches in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. At each event, the featured speaker will be in conversation with an acclaimed author, celebrating the formative role of books in both of their lives.
Notes from the Reading Life is a program co-presented by the National Book Foundation and The New York Public Library, supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
