The Polonsky Exhibition of The New York Public Library’s Treasures showcases some of the most extraordinary items from the 56 million in our collections. Free to experience at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building and online, the exhibition includes this printed syllabary—a set of symbols representing syllabic sounds—developed by Sequoyah, a member of the Cherokee Nation, beginning in the 1820s. The syllabary enabled for the first time written communication in the Cherokee language.

In this LIVE from NYPL event, Lenape Center co-directors Joe Baker, Curtis Zunigha, and Hadrien Coumans joined Brooklyn Public Library’s Curator of Visual Art Programming, Cora Fisher, to discuss their co-published book, A Lenapehoking Anthology. The book explores the personal journeys of people seeking welcome in their ancestral homeland while pushing back against their erasure.
