On-Site Copy Services

Self-Service Copying and Printing

All self-service copying requires prior Library staff approval. In order to preserve the physical condition of research collection materials, many of which are often both rare and fragile, Library staff must first approve whether an item’s condition will allow for copying. Some material may only be copied by Library staff (see Staff-Assisted Copying and Scanning), and some material may not be copied. Such items may often be reproduced by other means, including by patrons with personal digital cameras (including smartphones) according to the NYPL policy on photography, or by Interlibrary and Document Services.

Many of the items in the Library’s collections are protected by copyright. In all instances, it is the patron’s obligation to determine and satisfy copyright and other restrictions when using materials in the Library’s collections. The Library reserves the right not to copy materials in its collections because of restrictions on such materials or for any other reason.

There are no self-service photocopiers at the Schomburg Center; photocopying in all of the divisions of the Schomburg Center is mediated by staff.

For more information, including fees, see Copying and Printing Prices.

Staff-Assisted Copying and Scanning

Copy Services staff will accept copy requests from on-site users Monday through Saturday. Scanning for print or to computer files is also available through Copy Services at some locations. These files are saved to USB drives or CDROMs as 300 dpi PDFs. Credit card payments are accepted, and mailing services are available. For more information, see Copying and Printing Prices.

For professional-grade photographic and digital reproductions, you may place a request with Photographic Services and Permissions.

For photocopies or scans for research or personal use, you may place a request with Interlibrary and Document Services.
