  • Sacred to the memory of John Harris [microform] : he was a preacher of the Gospel of Christ to the heathen in the wilderness, his temporal substance was destroyed by fire. To earn bread for a wife and nine children, he entered as a substitute in the militia during the Creek War. He sought information from his Colonel as to his legal tour of duty. It was denied him. He was instructed by his officers that his tour of duty would expire on the 20th September on that day he surrendered his musket to his Captain, took from him a receipt for it, departed from camp and returned to the wretched hovel which contained his family. Fearing that he might have erred, he voluntarily returned to camp, and offered to do duty if he had mistaken his rights. Yet for this he was arrested, tried, and by the orders of General Andrew Jackson, shot to death on the 21st of February, 1815, having only four days notice of his fate, during which time he busied himself in writing to his afflicted wife, consoling her, and urging her to bring up her children in the love and fear of the Lord / an outraged country erects this monument, July 4, 1828.

  • This marbel cell contains the mouldering remains of the gallant David Hunt [microform] : he was the son of a soldier of the revolution, a volunteer in the Creek War, he faithfully served his country, until his tour of duty expired, when he left the camp, and returned to the home of his brave parent; where learning that his tour of duty had possibly not expired, he returned to camp and to his duty, the veteran father saying, "go my son, I am sure no harm can come to you; I too have been a soldier, and under Washington, a soldier returning to duty which he had left in error, always found mercy." But the son never more saw the face of his venerable father! He was arrested, tried and shot to death, by order of Gen. Andrew Jackson, on the 21st February, 1815 / the militia of his native state, have erected this simple slab to his memory, on the 12th, Aug. 1828.

  • These marble walls contain the body of Edward Linsey [microform] : he was of the six militia men, who, with others, yielding to the general opinion, that the legal period of their service had expired returned to their homes. Jealous of his reputation, he voluntarily entered his camp again, on hearing that doubts were entertained as to the propriety of his departure. For this he was shot to death, after usual forms of a militial trial, by orders of General Andrew jackson, on the 21st February, 1815 ? humanity, weeping over deeds which sully the lustrous fame of one whose military renown would otherwise have been dear to our country, has prompted its citizens, to erect that tablet, on the 4th of July, 1828.

  • Here lies Jacob Webb, of humble and poor parentage, and without education [microform] : he fostered the virtues of patriotism and bravery. He faithfully served as a private of the militia during the Creek War. He served for three months, and believed that to be the period for which he had been drafted. Reposing the judgement of others, (the truth of which has since been ascertained) he sought his parental proof, but soon returned to camp on being informed that his tour of duty had possibly not expired. Ater the usual formalities of military trial, he was shot to death by the orders of General Andrew Jackson on the 21st February, 1815 / the rememberance of this deed remains, though thirteen years have passed. The people of these United States, who love discipline tempered with humanity, have erected this monument in vindication of the fair fame of a poor militia man ; and in the hope that when war shall again assail their country, all honest yeamany, may not be deterred by this example of a hero's recklessness of human life ; for if the hero has been cruel, the counrty has been just. • Whatever was mortal of Henry Lewis reposes within these walls [microform] : in the Creek War he gallantly met the savage foe and conquered. Believing that his second tour of duty had expired, he left the camp and returned to his home, where learining that he might have erred in so doing, and anxious to preserve his dearly earned fame, he willingly sought the camp again, and offered to do duty, if yet legally bound. For this temporary absence he was arrested, tried, convicted; and by the orders of General Andrew Jackson, shot to death. His sympathising brethren in arms, detailed for the execution of this revolting sentence sought to miss the gallant youth. His life fled not at the first fire, humanity anxiously prayed to live, only that he might wipe away the foul stain. He died in extreme agony on the evening of the 21st February, 1815 / this monument errected by numerous freemen of these United States, will perpatuate their respect for the virtues of a brave militia man. Whilst it manifests to the world that the renown of a military hero, can never be permitted to render them insensible either to his crualties, or to their rights. July 4, 1828.

  • Here lie the mortal remains of David Morrow, brave and conscientious soldier in the militia of Creek War [microform] : his time of service had expired, and he returned to his home justified by the officers of every grade fearing that his legal tour of duty had possibly not expired, he voluntarily returned to camp, expressed great contrition for his errors, if any had been committed, and therupon received from his General a written pardon. He was nevertheless arrested, tried and shot to death by the orders of General Andrew Jackson, on the 21st February, 1815 : oh! reader whoever renown blot out from your indignant recollection this bloody deed done by a hero / the mites of widows and orphans have contributed to raise this slab to the memory of a brave man, on the 4th July, 1828.

  • Within these narrow walls are deposited the mortal remains of John Woods [microform] : who at the tender age of eighteen years, was shot to death, at Fort Strother, by the orders of General Andrew Jackson : stop traveller, wouldst thou learn the cause of the untimely end of this youth, know that, although he was the stay and comfort of an aged mother, she suffered him to volunteer in defence of his country, against the savage foe, on the 22d Jan. 1814. Whilst on guard, he was permitted to retire for a short time, to satisfy the cravings of hunger, when over his humble repast, he was rudely ordered to a menial duty, inconsistnt with that in which he was engaged and by one having no authority. As a soldier, he promptly refused obedience to an illegal command, and insisted on returning to his duty on guard, from which his absence was only by temporary permission. A rash vow previously made by the General, could only be satisfied by his death. A pardon was offered to him, if he would enlist in the regular service! A fatal reliance on the strict justice of his cause induced him to decline the offer and although the court, and all the officers petitioned for his reprieve, his doom had been sealed, and he was shot to death, for strict adherence to duty and for refusing compiance with an order which, if complied with, must have led to the same fatal end! / the youths of the American militia have erected this monument to his memory, July 4, 1828.

  • Sacred to the memory of the mothers of John Woods [microform] : she permitted her son, a youth of tender age, to join the militia at Fort Strother, in the Creek nation where he discharged his duty faithfully, until he was shot to death, by the orders of one who had no pity for his youth, no remembrance of his service, no respect for a mother's tears, no regard for the petitions of officers and of friends. The young soldier had committed no offence, unless the faithful return to his post, and refusing to disobey one command, in order to comply with another, given by one without authority, and before the first had been countermanded, be an offence. A rash determination of one in power, had excluded all hope, before the trial had commenced. A mother's grief soon ended in her total loss of reason, and of health. Death kindly released her from the misery of unavailing lamentation from the wretchedness of poverty and from the dreariness of widowed old age, bereft of a beloved son. Humanity, weeping over the fate of the mother and child, says "Father! forgive him." Justice uniting with humanity, says "But do not reward him for the cruel act." August 12, 1828.
