  • Early letters describe Allston's years at West Point prior to his 1821 graduation; from Alabama during his military service, 1822;, from Columbia (S.C.) during legislative sessions, 1828-1856, and elsewhere. Topics discussed include family and business concerns, plantation life, settlement of family estates, slavery and enslaved persons; anticipation and impact of the Civil War; education at West Point; the Catawba Indians; and Allston's legislative and executive affairs.
  • Plantation records document life at Matanzas Plantation (later called Chicora Wood) and other properties in Georgetown District (S.C.). Records include lists of enslaved persons identifed by name at Matanzas and account books memorandum books also identify slaves at Nightingale Hall, Waverly, and other plantations; financial records, journals and writings.
  • Business correspondence is mainly with factors regarding the sale of rice, shipments of plantation supplies, along with agreements to supply rice to the Confederate Army, hiring of African American freedmen, and other matters.
  • Later plantation records also contain letters dating to the Reconstruction era, written to the widowed Adele Petigru Allston from overseers, including several from Billy Grice, presumed to be a recently emancipated African American.
