Summary
Data are provided on labor force activity for the week prior to the survey. Comprehensive data are available on the employment status, occupation, and industry for persons aged 15 and over. Also shown are personal characteristics such as age, sex, race, marital status, veteran status, household relationship, educational background, and Hispanic origin. The Volunteer Supplement questions were asked of all persons aged 15 and over. Data are provided on participation in volunteer activities, the frequency of the volunteer activities, types of organizations volunteered for, and the types of activities chosen for volunteer service. The Veterans Supplement provides estimates on the demographic and labor force characteristics of veterans with service-connected disabilities in comparison to all other veterans. The data also identify Vietnam-theater veterans: those who actually served in Vietnam, Laos, or Cambodia. Estimates of the number of veterans with service-connected disabilities along with their labor force participation rate, occupation, unemployment rate, and use of certain educational and job training programs are provided. The United States Immunization and Smoking Survey provides information on disease history and/or protection through immunization against the common childhood diseases (diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough, polio, measles, rubella, chicken pox, and mumps) for persons 0-19 years of age. Data on immunization against influenza and pneumonia are available for all persons. Data are also available for adults on diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and certain chronic heart and lung conditions. Also provided is an indicator for children 0-5 years of age who were enrolled in licensed day care centers during the past year. For persons 16 years old and older who had smoked a minimum of 100 cigarettes, the following data are provided: age first started smoking, if they currently smoke, and whether other tobacco products such as snuff, chewing tobacco, cigars, and pipe tobacco were used. The Tobacco Use Supplement includes information on cigarette smoking and other tobacco products and identifies current smokers, former smokers, and nonsmokers. The Computer and Internet use Supplement contains information on computer and Internet usage for persons 3 years old and over. This information includes whether there is a computer in the household, if anyone in the household used the Internet, and whether anyone in the household used the Internet for e-mail. The Food Security Supplement was conducted by the Bureau of the Census for the Food and Consumer Service of the United States Department of Agriculture. Supplement questions were asked of all interviewed households, as appropriate. Questions included expenditure for food, whether the household had enough food and the kinds of food they wanted, and whether the household was running short of money and trying to make their food or food money go further. Additional questions dealt with getting food from food pantries or soup kitchens, cutting the size of or skipping meals, and losing weight because there wasn't enough food. The Supplement was intended to research the full range of the severity of food insecurity and hunger as experienced in United States households and was used by the supplement sponsor to produce a scaled measure of food insecurity. The Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factor Supplement provides estimates on the three major risk factors for heart disease: cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol. Data relating to cigarette smoking identify current smokers, former smokers, and nonsmokers. Items on high blood pressure and on high blood cholesterol measure the number of people who have been diagnosed by health professionals as being in these two risk categories and the number who follow the advice of a health professional in treating or controlling these conditions.
