Summary
Documentary on a residency by the Urban Bush Women, sponsored by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Va., in April 1995, as seen through the eyes of Pofina Williams, a student at Virginia Commonwealth University. She shares her observations of the company's interactions with the community, including workshops and performances for adults and students of various ages. Additional insights are provided by artistic director Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and company members Valerie Winborne, Beverley Prentice, and Christine King, who also discuss some of the issues explored in the company's works. In addition to the dance activities, company musician Junior "Gabu" Wedderburn is shown leading a workshop on Afro-Caribbean songs. Seen in performance excerpts are the dance works Girlfriends, Nyabinghi dreamtime, Shelter, and Batty moves.
