Note
  • Translation of the fragments of Julian the Apostate against the Christians, preserved in the work of St. Cyril of Alexandria, Pro Christianorum religione aversus libros Juliani libri decem; the Marquise d'Argens' translation, with the Greek text, was first published in 1764 under title: Défense du paganisme par l'empereur Julien. Cf. Bengesco, G. Voltaire, v. II, p. 397.
  • In this edition, Voltaire kept Argens' dedicatory epistle, and some of his notes, but replaced other parts by Argens with "Avis au lecteur" (p. 227); "Portrait de l'empereur Julien" (p. 228-255), "Examen du discours de l'empereur Julien contre la secte des Galiléens" (p. 256-265), and "Supplement au Discours de Julien" (p. 266-281) all written by Voltaire, although the second and fourth are attributed to the author of the "Militaire philosophe," which was written by J.A. Naigeon and the Baron d'Holbach. Cf. Bibliothèque nationale. Catalogue général, v. CCXIV, col. 1767-1768 and Bengesco, G. Voltaire, v. II, p. 397-399.
