Summary
"Now you can savor the full texts and lyrics of these hit shows, some published here for the first time, others long out of print. Stanley Richards has provided original cast lists, photographs and background information about the shows and their creators. He has placed the evolution of the American musical in perspective. The creators of the musicals in this anthology comprise a Who's Who of Broadway's brightest talents. Of Thee I Sing was the first musical ever to be honored with a Pulitzer Prize. The judges said of the play, "...(it) has a freshness and vitality which are both unusual and admirable..." Leading critic Brooks Atkinson said that 1947's great hit Brigadoon contained "...all of the arts of the theatre... woven into a single pattern of excitement." The following year he hailed Kiss Me, Kate as "...the best musical comedy of the season." In 1957 West Side Story opened to rave notices. One reviewer stated "this was one of those rare occasions when the lyric stage has come graphically forward with a major work dealing vigorously with timely subject matters." Two years later, Gypsy was hailed by dean of the drama critics, Walter Kerr, as "The best damn musical I've seen in years!" Now, once again as the houselights dim, sit back and enjoy Ten Great Musicals of the American Theatre." -- Jacket flap.
