Summary
"["Faith and toil"] is a tribute to the courage, tenacity and initiative of those early pioneer men and women who pitted their brains and their strength against the forbidding, untouched land, turning it from swamp to pasture. Packed full of information on the industries which were of vital importance to the sustained growth of the Tokomairiro district, there are histories of the gold rush (even the local minister went off to the gold fields!), coal mining, the limestone works, phosphate, and cement manufacture, wooollen mills, brick, pipe and pottery works, builders, tinsmiths -- these and many more details have been covered to give extensive background material. The development of the various churches is outlined, including the fierce opposition to the Salvation Army -- members were even arrested fro breaking the By-Laws by "beating a drum, blowing a cornet, and carrying torches". The kink in Milton's main street is explained as the result of two surveyors laying pegs and finding they didnt coincide ; tribute is paid to the forthright journalism of the "Bruce Herald", one of the longest running country newspapers in New Zealand. Early settlers are named, and as many biographies and photographs as possible included. An essential book for the appreciation and understanding of the fertile productive district of the Tokomairiro Plains."--Inside front cover.
