Summary
Florestan, a noble Spaniard, is imprisoned in the deepest dungeon of the fortress where he runs afoul of Pizarro, the governor. Leonora, his faithful wife, disguises herself as a man, Fidelio, enters the fortress and at length is able to free her husband.
