The Marshallin, wife of a general, is romantically involved with the young Octavian, but she realizes she will soon have to surrender her lover to a younger woman. When Baron Ochs von Lerchenau (a coarse, oafish relative) arrives seeking an envoy (Rosenkavalier) to Sophie, a young woman he wishes to marry, the Marshallin suggests Octavian. Upon their first meeting, Octavian and Sophie fall in love, but are thwarted by Ochs. Through various schemes, Ochs is defeated and the Marshallin graciously blesses the romance of Octavian and Sophie.
