Summary
"Mushrooms first attracted the attention of human beings during gathering forays in the hunter-gatherer epoch. Collections made were tested for their potential for food or medicine and subsequently some were used in hallucinogenic rituals. On account of their apparently sudden experience and ephemeral nature several legends and myths abounded. Mushrooms belong to a group of living organisms known as fungi; their scientific study started as late as the mid-eighteenth century. Mushrooms have held a great fascination for the academic community as well as for the general public. This book has been written with the purpose of making the subject intelligible to amateurs and beginners in academic courses." "This book has been divided into two main parts. Part one deals with biological features e.g. breeding patterns and mutations, besides discussing in depth poisonous, hallucinogenic, medicinal species and nutritional value. Part two is devoted solely to conservation of biological diversity, with special reference to mycodiversity - a field in which few publications are available for educated readers."--BOOK JACKET.
