Composed for the theatre of the Polish queen Maria Casimira in the Palazzo Zuccari of Rome, and premiered on January 15, 1714. It was later presented from a revised version by Handel's librettist, Paolo Rolli, for the 1720 season of the Royal Academy in London--Page xv.
This edition prepared from the original manuscript preserved at the Staats-und-Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg and the Walsh edition of arias from the British Library in London. Also consulted were the original printed libretto for London, and the different 1714 original libretto versions found at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Roma and Biblioteca Casanatense in Rome.
