- Summary
- Mark Strand, the fourth poet laureate of the United States, has selected 75 poems by new and established poets, all culled from magazines published in 1990. The volume presents a clear cross-section of current American poetry writing at its best. They include sonnets and songs, elegies, verse essays, dramatic monologues, and narrative poems. The subjects range from nature to myths, dreams, and memories. The settings include a hospital ward, a beauty parlor, a playground, a lunch counter, a country fair, and the Metropolitan Opera. While big names such as Donald Hall, James Merrill, Jane Kenyon, John Ashbery, and Joseph Brodsky are out in force, the volume includes the works of newcomers: Robert Polito's "Evidence" (a novel in verse), Mark Levine's "Work Song," Daniel Hoffman's "Who We Are," and David Trinidad's "Reruns," a sitcom haiku. ISBN 0-02-069844-5: $12.95.
