Description
  1. 1 videocassette (VHS) (110 min.) : sound, color; 1/2 in.
Summary
  1. The annual Joseph Maharam Foundation Awards for Theatre Design are presented to the winners for the 1981-2 season. Mr. Maharam delivers a speech. The awards are presented by Mel Gussow, Elizabeth I. McCann, and Michael Bennett. Performer Anita Morris arrives mid-show, presents an award, and joins the panel.
  2. Following the presentation of the Maharam awards, winners discuss their work. David Chapman describes his scenic designs for the brief Broadway run of The first. Edward Gianfrancesco talks about his scenic designs for two Off-Broadway productions, Little shop of horrors and Big Apple Messenger Service. Tharon Musser and Robin Wagner, who respectively designed lighting and sets for Dreamgirls, discuss their collaboration on that show, along with director Michael Bennett. Bennett feels sound designers deserve more credit for their contribution than they tend to receive. William Ivey Long talks about designing costumes for the musical Nine. Beverly Emmons discusses The life and adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, originally staged in London by the Royal Shakespeare Company. When the production came to New York, Emmons adapted its lighting design while Neil Peter Jampolis adapted its sets. Panelists also field questions from members of the audience.
