"This Kennedy Center celebration honors composer Aaron Copland, vocalist Ella Fitzgerald, choreographer Martha Graham, actor Henry Fonda, and playwright Tennessee Williams. Paying tribute to the honorees in word and/or performance are the following: Eric Sevareid; Leonard Bernstein with a film tribute to Copland; William Warfield with a Copland song; Art Buchwald with political satire; Alan Alda with a film tribute to Fonda, followed by Joshua Logan and Jane Alexander; Jean Stapleton introducing Placido Domingo, who sings a Leoncavallo aria; and Gene Kelly with a film tribute to Graham. Continuing with tributes to the honorees in word and/or performance are the following: Peggy Lyman and Tim Wengerd dancing Graham's "Frescoes"; Leontyne Price singing an aria; Ann Miller and Mickey Rooney in a "Sugar Babies" routine; Elia Kazan with a film tribute to Williams; Maureen Stapleton, Elizabeth Ashley, and Michael Moriarty reading prose; Peggy Lee with a film tribute to Fitzgerald, followed by jazz with Count Basie, Lee, Joe Williams, and others; and Gene Kelly with closing remarks."
