Summary
  1. Collection consists chiefly of studio portraits and candid shots of African American men, women, young adults, small children, couples, families, and other groups. Individuals appear to be of working class and middle class backgrounds. Among the individuals depicted in the collection are Booker T. Washington, Henry McNeal Turner, William J. Whipper, Oswald Durand, and Patrick Reason. In addition to portraits, the collection contains several views of cities (including Macon, Ga. and Charleston, S.C.), several staged photographs, and several illustrations.
  2. Of the photographs that bear studio information on their mounts, the majority were produced within the continental United States, including New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, and South Carolina, among other locations; a handful of prints bear information of studios located in Haiti, Curacao, and the United Kingdom.
