Summary
Depictions of African Americans living in the American South from 1969 to 1985, consisting of individual portraits of a stoic young boy, a Howard University student lifting weights, a cigar box fiddler, and an elder female resident of Africatown, Alabama; a group portrait of community elders; and candid shots and views of baseball game spectators, a railroad maintenance crew (gandy dancers), people on a commercial street, a young couple in a park, worshipers arriving for an evening service, individuals creating handicrafts, and objects displayed in the hallway of a home.

Biography (note)
  • Roland L. Freeman, born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1936, is an African American photojournalist and documentary photographer known for his work on Southern folk culture and African American quilters. Among Freeman's notable projects are his ongoing study of Black culture throughout the African diasopra entitled "While There is Still Time"; and his 1996 publication "A Communication of the Spirits: African-American Quilters, Preservers, and Their Stories," a landmark study of Black quilters, quilting guilds and quilt collectors. Freeman has been an research associate at the Smithsonian Institution's Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage since 1972, and founder/president of The Group for Cultural Documentation.

Roland L. Freeman, born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1936, is an African American photojournalist and documentary photographer known for his work on Southern folk culture and African American quilters.
