Summary
  1. The collection depicts aspects of Patti Bown's career as an jazz pianist and composer mainly from the mid-1950s to the 1990s. Depictions of Bown's personal life are very limited. The collection consists of individual portraits of Bown, including studio portraits possibly used for publicity purposes; views of Bown performing solo and with others; group portraits and candid shots with Bown and colleagues and friends at music sessions, gatherings and events; and individual and group portraits of her colleagues and friends. Of note are views of the Quincy Jones Orchestra/Big Band touring Europe when Bown was a member, in Belgium (ca. 1959) and West Germany (ca. 1961); views of the theatrical production of Harold Arlen's "Free and Easy" in Belgium (ca. 1959) that was accompanied by the Quincy Jones Orchestra; and views of Bown meeting friends and working during an unidentified music session (ca. 1970s).
  2. Among the individuals depicted with Bown are Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughn, Tony Bennett, Joseph Papp and Quincy Jones. Also included are candid shots of Gillespie at a music session and Billie Holiday outside a theater.

Biography (note)
  1. Patti Bown was born in Media, Pennsylvania in 1931. She played piano as a young child and continued her piano studies through college in Seattle attaining professional level and playing with local orchestras in the 1940s. In the 1950s, she moved to New York City and later became a long-time resident of Greenwich Village. In 1958 she released the album "Patti Bown Plays Big Piano." She worked with renowned musicians in New York City and on tour, and acted as musical director for bands and composed for film and television. She died in New York City in 2008.
