- Summary
- The collection depicts aspects of the social and personal life of labor activist William Henry Winslow, and the teaching career and personal life of his wife, Sadie Mills Winslow, from 1934 to 1984. Depictions of Henry's labor and civil-rights activities, and Sadie's community activities, are limited.
- The collection consists of individual and group portraits; and views of gatherings, social events, a wedding and school activities. Of note are group portraits with Henry at a possible civic gathering that includes lawyers Hubert T. Delany and William T. Andrews, and activist Channing Tobias, among others (ca. 1940); a group portrait with Henry at the Lido Ballroom Terrace for the Grand Human Bridge Ball, held by the American Bridge Association (1934); views of a tour group led by Sadie visiting a school (1954); and portraits and views of Sadie engaging with school children and sitting in her office (ca. 1953). Also included is the photo album for the couple's wedding which took place at Dwight Chapel, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut (1969).

- William Henry Winslow, also known as Henry Winslow, was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and lived most of his life in New York City. He worked in various public service sectors and eventually became his union's labor negotiator. He advocated for the desegregation of the labor unions in New York City and wrote essays about the history of labor unions and African American involvement in labor in the United States. In 1969, he married Sadie Mills and they remained together until his death in 1989. Sadie Mills Winslow was born in 1917 in New Haven, Connecticut. She received her B.A. in education from St. Augustine College and later taught education at Hunter College in New York City and at William Paterson College in New Jersey. She worked for many community services organizations and has been described as a "pillar of the Harlem Community."
