- Summary
- Album depicts aspects of military life for African American soldiers of the 93rd Infantry Division, stationed at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, during 1942. The album was compiled by Sergeant Everett E. Murphy, the father of civil rights attorney Clyde E. Murphy. The collection consists of candid shots of Murphy; candid shots of fellow soldiers and officers; views of the facilities at Fort Huachuca; views of Army field exercises and a field trip; and views of the Arizona landscape. Ephemera items consist of birthday cards and birth announcements from friends; handwritten and typewritten correspondence; a mimeographed map used for an Army field trip; and printed church bulletins.

- Sergeant Everett E. Murphy (1916-1989) served in the United States Army during the Second World War. In 1942, after being stationed at the Topeka, Kansas, Army Air Field, he was transfered to Fort Huachuca, Arizona, for basic training as a member of the newly activated all-African American 93rd Infantry Division. After the war, he was a postal worker and an air-traffic controller. Murphy's son, Clyde E. Murphy (1948-2010), was a civil rights attorney, first with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, in New York City (1975-1995), and later, starting in 1995, as head of the Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
