- Summary
- Jack Viertel, artistic director of City Center's series Encores! Great American musicals in concert, discusses his career with interviewer David Leopold. He describes the history of City Center, and the launch of Encores! in 1994. Although the series began by staging vintage Broadway musicals with minimal production values, Viertel explains how the productions became more elaborate over time, especially after the unanticipated success of the Encores! staging of Kander & Ebb's Chicago, which transferred to Broadway in 1996 and has run ever since. He talks about how shows are chosen for the series, and mentions a few favorites. He also discusses the legacy of the series, such as cast recordings, as well as the archival videos made of some of the shows for the Theatre on Film and Tape Archive.
