Summary
Poet Rita Dove was born in 1952, in Akron, Ohio. She served as poet laureate of the United States from 1993 to 1995. She was the author of many collections of poetry, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Thomas and Beulah in 1986, and Santa Mullattica in 2009. She is also the author of Fifth Sunday, a book of short stories; the novel Through the Ivory Gate; and the play The Darker Face of the Earth, which has been staged at many theaters including the Kennedy Center and the Royal National Theatre in London. Her song cycle Seven for Luck, with music by John Williams, debuted at Tanglewood in 1998. Dove worked as a commonwealth professor of English at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Besides her Pulitzer Prize, Dove's many literary and academic honors include the 1996 Heinz Award and the 1996 National Humanities Medal from President William J. Clinton.
