Summary
Nonprofit executive and historian Howard Dodson was born in Chester, Pennsylvania, on June 1, 1939. After earning his B.A. degree from West Chester State University and his M.A. degree from Villanova University in 1963, Dodson joined the Peace Corps and served for three years in Ecuador. Returning to the United States in 1967, he served as a director of minority recruitment for the Peace Corps. In 1974, he became the executive director of the Institute of the Black World, where he remained active until 1984. During that time, he also lectured at Emory University and became involved with the National Endowment for the Humanities. In 1984, he became the director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture which he hold over a quarter of a century until his retirement in 2010. During that time, he significantly built the Schomburg Center's holdings as well as increased its visibility worldwide. He authored numerous books and has received many awards, including the Malcolm X Museum Award. He also served on the boards of several organizations, including the Apollo Theater Foundation.
