Summary
Civil rights lawyer Elaine R. Jones was born on March 2, 1944 in Norfolk, Virginia. Jones graduated from Howard University in 1965. She joined the Peace Corps and taught English to students in Turkey, before attending the University of Virginia Law School, and graduating in 1970. Jones declined a job with a prominent Wall Street firm to join the NAACP's Legal Defense Fund (LDF). In the 1972 Furman v. Georgia Jones case, Jones won a resolution which abolished the death penalty in thirty-seven states for twelve years. She argued numerous discrimination cases, including some against the country's biggest employers. In 1975, Jones became special assistant to U.S. Secretary of Transportation William T. Coleman, and she returned to the LDF in 1977 as a litigator. From 1993 to 2004, Jones served as the first woman president and director-counsel of the LDF.
