Summary
Artistic director and dancer Doris Jones was born on June 3, 1913 in Boston, Massachusetts. She was a longtime resident of Washington, D.C. and one of the foremost educators of ballet dancers in the country. Jones and her friend Claire Haywood founded the Jones-Haywood School of Ballet in 1941, to provide opportunities for young African Americans to learn classical dance. In 1961, Jones and Haywood founded the Capitol Ballet Company to provide a venue for African American dancers, where Jones would go on to serve as artistic director until 1982. In 1980, Jones established the Jones-Haywood Youth Dancers to provide opportunities for young dancers. Jones trained a number of world-renowned dancers, including Chita Rivera, Sylvester Campbell and Sandra Fortune-Green. She was the recipient of numerous awards. She choreographed for the Washington Opera Society and the Washington Civic Opera. Jones passed away on March 21, 2006 at age 92.
