- Summary
- City commissioner Clarence Love was born on March 20, 1929 in Palmetto, Florida. The outbreak of World War II compelled Love to drop out of school and work to help support his family. During the next four years, he took a series of jobs and sent his paychecks home to his parents. In 1945, he returned to school in seventh grade, although he was sixteen years old. Following graduation, Love married and settled in Bradenton, Florida. In 1960, he collected rent for a local property owner who rented nearly eighty apartment units. He served as rent collector until 1973 when he purchased the apartments. Love served one term as city commissioner and was responsible for a number of Section VIII programs and redevelopment initiatives. Love was instrumental in getting sidewalks and streetlights installed in the city's poorest communities. The City of Bradenton dedicated Love Park in Love's honor in July, 2017.
