Summary
Howard "Louis Bluie" Armstrong was born on March 4, 1909, in Dayton, Tennessee. As a child, Armstrong was an avid learner. He played the mandolin, fiddle and guitar, among other instruments; learned to speak Italian, German, Polish, and Spanish; and began drawing and painting. Armstrong started playing in local bands as a teenager and recorded as part of the successful Martin, Bogan & Armstrong Trio before moving to Chicago in 1933. After serving in World War II, Armstrong supported his family as an assembly line worker in Detroit, but the Martin, Bogan & Armstrong Trio reunited in 1971 to perform and record several albums. Armstrong was fluent in seven languages and played twenty-two instruments. He was the subject of two documentary films, Louie Bluie (1985) and Sweet Old Song (2002), and the recipient of a National Heritage Award. Armstrong passed away on July 30, 2003 at the age of ninety-four.
