- Corporate chief executive Knowlton R. Atterbeary was born on September 18, 1946 in Philadelphia. He graduated from Michigan State University with his B.S. degree in systems science and economics in 1968 and his M.B.A. in 1970. After working for a year as the director of marketing for the Black Economic Union of Kansas City, Missouri, Atterbeary served as senior vice president and partner from 1972 to 1991 for consulting firm Macro International. In 1981, Atterbeary founded KRA Corporation, a professional and technical services firm, serving as president and CEO. Under his leadership, KRA grew from a staff of six to hundreds of employees. The firm was named one of the 500 fastest-growing, privately held companies in the United States by Inc. Magazine. Atterbeary's firm was named Small Disadvantaged Business Contractor of the Year by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and 1997 Outstanding Minority Business Enterprise by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
