Summary
Community leader Ada Anderson, recognized for her work with civil rights, was born Ada Cecilia Collins on October 2, 1921 in Austin, Texas. In 1937, Anderson graduated from the segregated L.C. Anderson High School. She then attended Tillotson College and graduated with a B.S. degree in home economics. She finished the coursework for her M.S. degree in library science, but she was denied entrance for the required library fieldwork because she was African American. After marrying Andy Anderson in 1943, the couple began a real estate and insurance firm. In 1965, Anderson earned her M.S. degree in educational psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. Anderson was the first African American to win a countywide election in Travis County and sit on the Austin Community College Board. In 2014, Anderson presented a $3 million gift to her alma mater Huston-Tillotson University, the largest donation in its history.
