- The collection consists of 10 audio and moving image recordings comprising two works: "The History of the Black Man in America" and "Herman Melville." "The History of the Black Man in America" is an 8 part filmstrip. Included in the collection are Parts 2-6 and 8. "Herman Melville" is in 2 parts: "His Journey and Works" and "In Pursuit of Moby Dick." The audio portion of the collection consists of the audio recordings to accompany Part 3 ("The Civil War") and Part 8 (Black Protest Movements") of "The History of the Black Man in America."

- Julian Hudson Mayfield (June 6, 1928 – October 20, 1984) was an American actor, director, writer, lecturer and civil rights activist. His theatrical work includes writing the plays "Fire" (1949) and "417" (1955); directing and producing Ossie Davis's "Alice in Wonder" (1952); and making his Broadway acting debut as Absalom in the musical "Lost in the Stars" (1949). He also wrote the screenplay and starred in the film "Uptight" (1968) and wrote the 1976 screenplay of his novel "The Long Night." His literary works include the novels "The Hit" (1957), "The Long Night" (1958) and "The Grand Parade" (1961); he wrote numerous articles for leftist and black nationalist publications. He went to live in Ghana in 1961 and worked as a writer in the office of President Kwame Nkrumah and as a journalist and editor of African Review, an international magazine of political and economic affairs.
