Summary
  1. The oral history interview with Arvell Shaw begins with his childhood and youth. He was born September 15, 1923, in St. Louis, Missouri. He began playing with Louis Armstrong in 1947, an association that lasted for over twenty-five years. After service in World War II, Shaw returned to St. Louis where he first encountered Louis Armstrong who was in need of a substitute bassist. Joe Garland helped Shaw learn the arrangements. He toured with Armstrong throughout Europe and Africa. Shaw gives an intimate portrayal of Armstrong both as a musician and as a human being, his character and legacy.
