Summary
Entry of Marie de Médicis, widow of Henri IV, King of France, and mother of Henrietta Maria, Queen of England, into England in October 1638. She landed at Harwich and progressed via Colchester to London, stopping at the mansions of Middlemead and Gidea Hall; in London, she was received at the Palace of St. James. See "Maria de' Medici in Essex, 1638," by W. Gurney Benam, in the Essex review, v. 10 (1900), pages 200-208.

  • Illustrations: 4 full-page engravings (added allegorical title page; the two dedicatees, Charles I, King of England, with Justice, and his consort, Henrietta Maria, with Minerva; and Marie de Médicis received by the English monarchs) and 1 large and 9 full-page etched views of Marie de Médicis' progress from Harwich to London, that of the arrival in London on 2 folded leaves. Although all are sometimes attributed to Wenceslaus Hollar (e.g. by Landwehr, cited below), probably only the added title page and the three portraits are by him; see New Hollstein, Parthey and Pennington (cited below).   • An earlier state of the allegorical title page, with verses by La Serre in place of the imprint and with different allegorical figures in lower half of the plate, is known; see New Hollstein and Pennington.
