He traces the process of designing a show from the first reading of the script to the drawing board, and cites examples from his career, including the original productions of Promises, promses and A chorus line. He illustrates his points by displaying his construction drawings and floor plan from the 1999 revival of Cole Porter's Kiss me, Kate.
