Summary
"Jim spends his evenings at Café De Waarheid, a place where no rules apply, except for the custom. A place where he meets his old school friends Bertus, Tanja and Steven every day, where they drink beer, a lot of beer, and talk about little. After closing time, while the birds sing again and the first people go to work, he walks home musingly. Due to the steadily growing pile of unopened bills on his doormat, Jim is forced to leave his home. He pulls the door behind him and starts a wandering existence. In search of a safe place, he finds a taciturn woman and her dog on a bench behind the church. He calls her Marie and she is just as familiar to him as the church square in a short time. When news reports troubling through the news ticker, his life gets disrupted. The collapse of the cathedral, troop movements at the border, rising prices for bread and beer. It is becoming increasingly clear that the outcasts, however divided they may be, should make their voices heard. 'Café De Waarheid 'describes society as indifferent, apathetic and divided. How do you sustain yourself in a world that is changing due to haste and greed? And to what extent can a city be your home? Mark Boog pays tribute to the city, which with its familiar spots and niches, its magnificent buildings and venerable bridges, its benches and trees, says inaudibly: here you belong."--Back cover
