Summary

1. This scrapbook (1956-1961) is about education in New York City and includes clippings from a variety of newspapers. The primary topic included is the conflicts surrounding the integration of New York City public schools, including two instances that led to ongoing protests and press coverage: the transfer of Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn students to schools in Glendale, Queens, and the transfer of Harlem students to Yorkville schools. Additionally, this scrapbook covers the condition of Harlem schools, New York City's pledge to integrate all schools, and conflict over the construction of a new school in Harlem.
2. This scrapbook's spine title is labeled Little Rock, Arkansas Public Schools vol 5, but that title is incorrect and does not reflect the content of the scrapbook.

Biography (note)

1. The Schomburg Center Scrapbooks are a collection of 296 volumes assembled by library staff between the 1920s and 1960s, to supplement the collection of black history resources that would later form the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The staff were strategic in their clipping, choosing to highlight black voices and topics of particular interest to the African American community. The scrapbooks are organized by topic and consist primarily of newspaper clippings, unless otherwise noted.

Provenance (note)

1. The Schomburg scrapbooks may have grown out of the clipping file, when librarian Catherine Latimer assigned WPA workers to clip African American and mainstream newspapers and assemble them into scrapbooks. Two or three scrapbooks on Marcus Garvey went missing around 1960.
