Description
1 volume (122 manuscript or printed pages; 68 total leaves); 20 cm
Summary
Reversed calf-bound notebook, rebacked, with "MS." stamped in gilt on the spine, black spine rules. Contains manuscirpt recipes in divers hands, some signed and dated, written over a period of at least eighty years. The earliest entries are apparently from around 1787, the date written on the title page. The latest date recorded is February 18, 1867; some undated entries could possibly date into the early 20th century. With an alphabetcal index at the front. Most of the recipies are culinary ("To cure a Ham"; "To Pickle Oisters"; "Sheep's Head Soup"); others are medical or household oriented ("Salve for chilblains"; "Snail milk or Broth; "Waterproof for books and shoes"). Two printed handbill advertisements are tipped in near the end of the volume: for "The Real Constitution Water," prepared and sold by Frederick Richards, Camp Hill Cottage, Henley in Arden, Warwickshire (1854); and for the "Oriental Depot," 38, Leicester Square [London], mid-19th century, giving directions on how "to curry 2 lbs. of meat" and "for a dish of rice."
