Summary
Manuscript notebook in ink, apparently in divers hands, containing recipes and literary selections. The first 31 pages contain mostly recipes of various types: medical ("Recipe for a cough," "When any accident happens to the eyes, such as unslaked lime falling into them," "Recipe for a ring worm"); culinary ("To pickle butter," "Parsnip wine," "To make ginger beer"); and household, a few with naval implications ("A fire and water proof cement," "Receipt for white wash for quarter deck, waist, or outside of a ship," "To keep water out of shoes"). The next 44 pages, reverso, starting from the other end of the notebook, contain mostly brief excerpts from literary and history texts, by authors including Laurence Sterne, Henry Fielding, Plutarch, Cervantes, Kotzebue, Elizabeth Hamilton, Pope, Edward Young and others. "[Sir?] Edward Chetham" in ink at the top of the first page of recipes. Earliest dated entry is 22 September 1810; latest dated entry is 28 September 1830. Flexible sheep binding. Within white envelope.
