Summary
  1. Collection depicts some aspects of the personal life, and the social and professional activities of civic and religious leader Channing H. Tobias, from the 1910s to the 1950s. Depictions of the early years of his life are not included; depictions of his activities with specific organizations are limited. Collection consists of studio portraits, mainly of Tobias (ca. 1910s-1940s), and some family members; group portraits showing family members; candid shots of Tobias, his first wife Mary and daughters Belle and Mary, and other relatives; candid shots of Tobias with second wife, Eva; group portraits showing Tobias with professional colleagues and acquaintances; and views of Tobias addressing gatherings, and attending dinners and meetings.
  2. Of note are views of Tobias and Eva in Paris, France (1951-1952) when he was an alternate American delegate to the United Nations General Assembly; a photographic reproduction of a portrait of Tobias by painter Betsy Graves (1943-1944); and a view with a hatless Tobias standing in the middle of a crowd of white people posing on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey (ca. 1930s). Among the individuals depicted with Tobias include church minister and civic leader Jesse E. Moorland, New York City Mayor Robert F. Warner, academic and diplomat Ralph Bunche, soprano and music educator Dorothy Maynor, and civil rights activists Robert C. Weaver and Roy Wilkins.

  1. Channing Heggie Tobias, 1882-1961, was an African American civic and religious leader. He was an official with the Young Men's Christian Association, in Washington, D.C. (1911-1923) and New York City (1923-1946); served as the first African American director of the Phelps-Stokes Fund (1946-1953); and was chairman of the board of the NAACP (1953-1959). He also served as an advisor to President Harry Truman and to the New York City Mayor's office during the 1940s; was an alternate United States delegate to the United Nations (1951-1952); and served as director or trustee for various foundations and academic institutions.
