Note
  • Includes clippings (Folders 18-20), invitations and production announcements (Folders 2-4), press releases (Folder 5), and a business prospectus (Folder 17). Of note is an unsigned, undated, typed draft of Paul Goodman's New theater and the unions, with a few ms. emendations in two different hands, sent as a letter to the editor of the Village Voice. This was eventually published in Dissent, Fall 1959 (Folder 1).
  • Programs featuring choreography, performances and dance workshops include works by Merce Cunningham, Glen Tetley, Si-Lan Chen, Jack Moore, Myra Kinch, Ray Harrison, and Judith Martin, among others. Programs for performances of music include works by Alan Hovhaness, John Cage, Henry Cowell, Vanig Hovsepian (better known as Turk van Lake), Lucille Dlugoszewski, and Lou Harrison, as well as piano recitals by David Tudor. Programs for performances of poetry include works by John Ashbery and Dylan Thomas. Programs for plays include: The thirteenth god by Richard Gerson; Four plays by Paul Goodman, Bertolt Brecht, Gertrude Stein, and Frederico Garcia Lorca; Dr. Faustus lights the lights by Gertrude Stein; Beyond the mountains by Kenneth Rexroth; Stein Picasso Eliot, which consisted of Ladies' voices by Gertrude Stein, Desire trapped by the tail by Pablo Picasso, and Sweeney Agonistes by T. S. Eliot (Folders 6-16).

  • The Living Theatre was founded in 1947 by Judith Malina (1926-2015), a student of Erwin Piscator, and Julian Beck (1925-1985), an abstract expressionist painter of the New York School. The first performances of the Living Theatre were presented in the Becks' apartment in 1951. Later that year, the Living Theatre moved to the Cherry Lane Theatre, and inaugurated their initial season with Gertrude Stein's Dr. Faustus lights the lights, Paul Goodman's Faustina, and Kenneth Rexroth's Beyond the mountains.
