Victorian-era made-to-purpose scrapbook containing cuttings of portraits from popular magazines, mainly unsourced and undated, some in color, of late 19th and early 20th century actresses and some actors including: Viola Allen, Julia Marlowe, Ellen Terry, Wilson Barrett, Maud Jeffries, Julia Arthur, Maude Adams, Cora Urquhart Brown-Potter, Maxine Elliott, Minnie Maddern Fiske, William Gillette, the dancer Cléo de Mérode, Sarah Bernhardt, Virginia Harned, E.H. Sothern, Ada Rehan, Mary Mannering, Olga Nethersole, Fanny Davenport, Isabel Irving, Ethel Barrymore, Mrs. Leslie Carter, Lillian Lawrence.

  1. A 19th century cloth and leather-bound folio volume scrapbook from an unknown manufacturer with gilt trim and decorated endpapers. Contents collected and assembled by an unknown compiler.
  2. Holograph note from donor pasted to flyleaf: "This album of celebrities of the theatre was found in an old book shop by Dr. John Cummin and given to me[.] As it must have been compiled by a great lover of the theatre I feel that it belongs in a Library of Theatrical History, and so, reluctantly part with it[.] Julia Arthur Cheney Oct. -- [19]43"
Biography (note)
  1. Julia Arthur was born as Ida Lewis in Hamilton, Ontario, May 3, 1869 and died March 28, 1950 in Boston, Massasschusets. One of the great actresses of her era, Arthur performed in numerous classical and popular stage successes and in some early films. She married Benjamin Pierce Cheney, Jr., a businessman from a wealthy family, in 1898.
