- Biography
- The Emerson Drug Company, Baltimore, Maryland, first produced Bromo-Seltzer in 1888, marketed as a "cure-all" for a wide range of physical and mental disorders. From the mid-1890s until around 1910, the company issued several collections of songs and instrumental pieces with piano and organ accompaniment, eventually totalling 171. The songs were primarily sentimental or patriotic in nature and draw heavily from traditional sources or ballad operas and operettas popular at the time. The music served as advertisements for both Bromo-Seltzer and local pharmacies who supplied free copies to their customers. The pieces could also be obtained from the Music Department of the Emerson Drug Company by enclosing a stamp and a Bromo-Seltzer wrapper.
