Forty-five programs and playbills (1933 - 1943) for The pursuit of happiness by Lawrence Langner and Armina Marshall, utilizing the literary pseudonyms Alan Child and Isabelle (or Isabel) Loudon, documenting the original Broadway and touring productions as well as numerous amateur, regional, college, and university revivals. Of note is a production by the South Shore Players (Cohasset, Mass.) featuring Humphrey Bogart and five productions by the Federal Theatre Project.
Item 21, a program for a 1934 production by the Hopatong Broadway Players (Netcong, N.J.), utilizes the theatrical pseudonym George Spelvin.
Item 43, a program for a 1942 production by the University Civic Theatre (Denver, Colo.) includes a statement from Charles A. Shinn, chairman of the board of directors, in support of U.S. efforts in World War II, asserting that, during wartime, "theatre must be maintained for the strengthening influence it has on the human spirit."
Item 44, a program for a 1942 production by Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre (New Orleans, La.), includes an excerpt from Langner and Marshall's forward to the published version of the play discussing the inherent contradictions of United States history and the essential importance of anti-racism and social justice.
