Fifty two playbills and programs (1866 - 1973) for Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare documenting performances by a range of actors of the late 19th to late 20th century, primarily in the United States in the early 20th century, with some in England and Canada, including regional, amateur, college, and university productions. Of note is an 1866 production by the Royal Naval School [New Cross] Amateur Dramatic Society (London); the Ben Greet Players at a number of venues in London including the Edmonton Empire and the Wood Green Empire; Jo Davidson's 1950 production at Brooklyn College with Stanley Gevirtz, Paul ("Irwin") Mazursky, Morty Gunty, Marshall Brement, Irwin Ziff, Norman Finkelstein; two outdoor productions by The New York Shakespeare Festival; Richard D. Spear's 1968 production at Wayne State University with Jeffrey Tambor as Caesar; Natan Alterman's Hebrew translation for the Habimah Theatre; five modern dress versions: Orson Welles for the Mercury Theatre (on tour), the Festival Theatre (Cambridge, England), the Chiswick County School (High Wycombe, England), Michael Croft's production for the Youth Theatre (London and Rome) with John Shrapnel and Simon Ward, David Brooks's production at the Studio Theatre (Buffalo, N.Y.).
  2. The theatrical pseudonym George Spelvin is utilized in item 43, a program for the Midland (Tx.) Community Theatre.
  3. Item 48, a program for a 1967 production at the Trinity Square Repertory Theatre (Providence, R.I.), features the performance artist Ethyl Eichelberger, billed as "James," in a number of small roles early in his career.
