  • Fifteen library-bound volumes and one portfolio of programs annotated and kept by Robert Benchley, the bulk documenting his attendance at the theatre on Broadway and at a few regional performances, 1896 - 1943. MWEZ + n.c. 8204 documents performances Benchley attended in Paris, Berlin, and London in the late 1920s, notably several nightclub appearances by Josephine Baker. MWEZ + n.c. 8205 documents performances Benchley attended as a young man in Worcester, Massachusetts and Portland, Maine in 1896 and 1897. MWEZ + n.c. 8219 contains six larger format souvenir programs, notably the first United States tour of Mei Lan-Fang.
  • Item 16 in MWEZ + n.c. 8204 is an official racing card from the 1928 Grand National horse race at Aintree Racecourse, Liverpool, England, March 30, 1928.

Author, critic, and actor Robert Charles Benchley was born September 15, 1889 in Worcester, Massachusetts and died November 21, 1945 in New York City. He is best known for his humorous and satirical work in short film, as a columnist for The New Yorker and Vanity Fair magazines, among others, and as a member of the Algonquin Round Table, the informal circle of writers, critics, and performers that was active socially between 1919 and 1929.
