Description
circa 820 boxes and 11 volumes
Summary
The collection consists of over 50,000 images, nearly all black and white, taken by Francis Bruguière, Florence Vandamm, and her firm Vandamm Studio, located first in London and later in New York City, from the 1910s until 1961. There are also office job ledgers, three bound volumes of photographs of plays from 1925-1928, an album of photographs taken at the New York City Stage Door Canteen, and a scrapbook of clippings of early published images. The collection documents Vandamm's career photographing on-stage theater and dance productions in New York City, as well as studio portaits of individual performers, performing arts-related personalities, and private individuals and groups. Among her long-standing clients were the Theatre Guild and Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Also of significance in this collection are original negatives and prints of theatre performances and studio portraits taken by noted art photographer Francis Bruguière, whose studio Vandamm bought to re-establish her own firm in New York City. The Vandamm studio was located at 152 W. 57th Street.

Biography
Florence Vandamm (1882-1963) opened her first photography studio in London in 1907, specializing in images of theater, music and dance. When she moved to New York City in the early 1920s, she purchased the negatives and took over clients from Francis Bruguière and established her firm as one of the leading documenters of Broadway and Off-Broadway theatre and dance until she closed her studio in 1961. Her husband, George R. Thomas, known professionally as Tommy Vandamm, also worked closely with her until his death in 1944. With a career spanning over five decades, Florence Vandamm was one of the most prolific and widely published female commercial photographers of the 20th century.
