  1. Three dozen playbills and programs (1876 - 1941) for King Lear by William Shakespeare, documenting productions from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century mainly in England and the United States. Of note are performances by Mr. Creswick, Edwin Booth, Henry Irving, Robert Mantell, Reginald Pole, Fritz Leiber, John Gielgud, Sam Jaffe in Erwin Piscator's production for the Dramatic Workshop of The New School [for Social Research] (N.Y.), and, lastly, Thomas Mitchell in Archibald MacLeish's adaptation broadcast live for the Columbia Shakespearean Cycle radio program, later released as a sound recording called Shakespeare in Hollywood. Regional, college, university, and amateur productions are included.
  2. Item 18, a program for a 1925 performance by Robert Mantell and Genevieve Hamper at Erlanger's Biltmore Theatre (Los Angeles, Ca.) is part of the Lotto Collection.
  3. Item 36 is a program for a 1941 performance by the Chekhov Theatre Players at the Elmhirst Theatre (Ct.) under the direction of Michael Chekhov, featuring Ford Rainey, Hurd Hatfield, Beatrice Straight, and Yul [as "Youl"] Brynner.

  1. Item 6, a program for a 1905 performance by F.R. Benson and Constance Featherstonhaugh, billed as "Mr. and Mrs. F.R. Benson," at the Coronet Theatre (London), is detached from the volume and has been placed in mylar sleeves at the front of the container.
