  • Programs (1837 - 1908) for Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare in England and the United States. This lot of several dozen playbills and programs documents performances by a range of actors from the mid-19th to the early 20th Century including Edwin Booth, Helena Modjeska, Julia Marlowe, Johnston Forbes-Robertson and Mrs. Patrick Campbell, Maude Adams, and Julia Arthur and W.S. Hart. Of note are performances at Mrs. Osborn's Playhouse (NY) and by the Boston Stage Society as well as a number of performances at the Royal Lyceum Theatre (London) by Henry Irving and Ellen Terry, then under the management of Irving's friend, the Irish novelist Bram Stoker.
  • Item 1 is an issue of The Theatrical Observer and Daily Bills of the Play, February 1, 1837, which is part of the Stead Collection.
  • Item 44 is a program for The Stock Opera Company's 1908 Season of Light and Standard Opera at the Castle Square Theatre (Boston) including Charles Gounod's Romeo and Juliet.
